Chapter Two: Flashbacks And Stolen Kisses

The sun hung high in the sky as Steve swung the axe with more force than necessary, the rhythmic thud of wood splitting echoing through the expansive backyard of the Avengers Compound. He was lost in thought, his mind spinning with memories of a past he had tried so hard to forget.

"You left early last night," Tony’s voice broke through the silence, pulling Steve from his reverie. “Kinda expected you and Sarah to be more… uh…”

Steve's grip tightened on the axe handle as he continued to chop wood, his movements more aggressive. "It’s been years, Tony. People change.”

Tony watched him carefully, sensing the tension radiating off him in waves. "Okay, look… I know," he stated matter-of-factly, cutting straight to the heart of the matter. “You and Sarah. I know.”

Steve froze mid-swing, his jaw tightening at the mention of her name. "Know what?"

"The day of my wedding…? I know.”

“Don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Steve, I saw you two…”

“Stop!”

Steve's heart sank at Tony's words. He had hoped to leave the past behind him, to bury the memories of what had transpired between him and Sarah all those years ago.

“What happened between you two? Best friends for years... The wedding happens... And she suddenly bolts?"

Steve's grip on the axe tightened, his knuckles turning white as he struggled to find the words to convey the turmoil raging within him.

"Haven’t we gone over this enough when she left?”

“We have... But judging by your snippiness, I’m going to go out on a limb and say there’s more to the story.”

“Look, I don't know, okay! I didn't know then and I don't know now."

Flashback: 5 years ago (Tony and Pepper’s wedding)

The echoes of laughter and music had long faded, leaving only the soft buzz of cater waiters in the distance. It was just Steve and Sarah, the last remnants of Tony and Pepper's wedding reception scattered around them like glitter and confetti.

Sarah stood atop the bar counter, her laughter ringing out into the empty space as she danced with reckless abandon, the hem of her dress swirling around her legs. Her movements were graceful yet uninhibited.

"Sarah, come on. I don't want you to hurt yourself," Steve's voice cut through the silence, his concern evident as he gently grabbed her by the ankle, trying to coax her down.

But Sarah giggled, playfully pulling out of his grasp with a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Stevie, you and I both know you'd catch me if I were to fall," she teased, her voice filled with playful defiance. "My own, personal super soldier."

Steve couldn't help but smile at her antics, his heart swelling with both fondness and frustration. He reached for the champagne bottle in her hand, intending to put an end to her impromptu performance, but she pulled back with a teasing grin, her eyes sparkling with mischief.

"Ah-ah, not so fast, Captain," she teased. “Why do you want it, anyway? You can’t get buzzed.”

There was a brief moment of hesitation as they stood locked in a silent dance of desire and longing. And then, without warning, Sarah lost her footing, tumbling into Steve's waiting arms with a soft gasp of surprise.

The cork of the champagne bottle popped with a loud bang, spewing frothy bubbles and golden liquid everywhere. Steve chuckled, his heart racing as he held Sarah close, their bodies pressed together.

"I swear, that's never happened to me before," Steve teased, a playful glint in his eyes.

Picking up on his subtle innuendo, Sarah chuckled softly, her gaze locked with his as she leaned in closer, her lips hovering just inches from his. "So you're a little excited. Believe me, it happens," she murmured, her breath warm against his skin.

In that moment, all pretence and restraint fell away, leaving only the raw intensity of their mutual attraction. With a surge of courage, Sarah closed the distance between them, her lips meeting his in a searing kiss that sent shockwaves of desire coursing through Steve's veins.

Meanwhile, across town, Sarah sat alone in her hotel room, clutching a wedding invitation in her trembling hands. The words taunted her, mocking her with their cruel irony.

The invitation, adorned with elegant script and delicate designs, bore the words "You're invited to our wedding!". But as Sarah traced the words with her fingertips, her mind wandered back to that fateful night five years ago, to the echoes of laughter and the intoxicating thrill of stolen kisses.

As flashes of that fateful night played out in her mind like a cruelly vivid movie reel, Sarah felt her heart shatter into a million pieces. She remembered the warmth of Steve's skin beneath her fingertips, the taste of his lips against hers as they lost themselves in a whirlwind of passion and desire.

But the memories were bittersweet, tainted by the knowledge that they could never be more than fleeting moments of stolen happiness. She had known from the start that their love was doomed, a dangerous game of shame that could only end in heartbreak.

As tears welled in her eyes, Sarah let out a choked sob, her body shaking with the weight of her many regrets and unfulfilled dreams. She knew that she had made a choice the night she left, a choice that had torn her world apart and left her longing for something she could never reclaim.

And as she sat, clutching the wedding invitation in her trembling hands, Sarah couldn't help but wonder what might have been if she had chosen differently. If she had followed her heart, instead of letting fear and doubt dictate her actions.

But she knew that it was too late for regrets now. Steve was about to marry her sister, and there was nothing she could do to change that. All she could do was bury her heartache beneath a façade of false smiles and empty congratulations, and pray that one day the pain would fade away into nothingness.
