Chapter 1: The Avengers' Reunion
The world swam in and out of focus, a kaleidoscope
of blurred silhouettes and muffled sounds. You tried to move, to cry out, but
your body refused to obey. Rough hands grasped your arms and legs, lifting you
from the cool leather of a car seat. The night air hit your face, a mere moment
of crisp clarity before submerged in the musty darkness of an unfamiliar
building. Well, to be fair, everything was unfamiliar. The car, the
city, the driver, the poor girl being manhandled… Wait. Shit. That’s… that’s
your reflection.
Fluorescent lights flickered to life, searing your
eyes. You blinked, trying to make sense of your surroundings. Peeling posters of
artwork adorned grimy walls.
Your captors' footsteps shuffled as they hauled you
towards a chair in the centre of the room. Not just any chair… a tattoo chair. While
only half conscious, panic still clawed at your gut as they strapped you in,
your limbs leaden and unresponsive.
A face loomed into view, filling your field of
vision. A man, his grizzled beard shot through with grey, grinned down at you,
his gold tooth glinting in the blinding light.
"Don't worry, darlin'," he drawled, his
breath hot against your cheek. "Whatever pain you feel will soon be
forgotten."
You wanted to scream, to plead, but your voice was
as paralysed as the rest of you. The tattoo artist moved away, and for a
moment, blessed darkness enveloped you once more. Then, a soft blue glow
illuminated the room. And under the black light, something on the artist's arms
came alive. Intricate patterns glowing across his skin in bioluminescent
brilliance.
The buzzing began, a high-pitched whine that seemed
to vibrate through your very bones. You glimpsed the needle, glowing with that
same unearthly light, before your mind mercifully slipped away into
unconsciousness.

When you came to (and I use this term loosely),
strong hands gripped you, hauling you upright. Your feet dragged uselessly
across rough asphalt as two men flanked you, their faces obscured in the dark
of what you blearily recognised as a parking garage.
Ahead, barely visible in the dark, empty space, sat
a duffel bag. Innocent enough, and yet the sight of it sent a jolt of sheer
terror through your body. You didn't know why, couldn't remember how you got
here or what the bag was for, but every instinct screamed danger.
Your mind raced (as much as it could in the span of
a few seconds), grasping for a prayer, a plea, anything to make this stop. But
the darkness was already creeping in at your peripheral vision. And as
consciousness began to slip away, a single, desperate thought echoed in your
mind.
“Please, let me stay under this time. Whatever comes
next... I don't want to see it.”
The world faded to black.
Meanwhile…
The Avengers Compound buzzed with an energy it
hadn't seen in two years.
Music and laughter filtered through from the entertainment
area, a vast difference from the stony silence that had permeated these walls
not so long ago. The team, once broken, now gathered around the bar, drinks in
hand, and relief and merriment evident on their faces.
Tony, ever the centre of attention, stood with a
tumbler of scotch swirling in his hand. "You know, I gotta say, it's weird
seeing all your mugs in one place again. Especially you, Capsicle. Thought you
might've grown a beard or something while you were off being a fugitive."
Steve chuckled, shaking his head. "Sorry to
disappoint, Tony. Guess I'm just not as stylish as you."
"Few are, my friend. Few are," Tony
quipped.
Across the room, Clint was regaling Thor and Bruce
with an animated tale of his latest misadventure. "So there I am,
surrounded by these goons, right, and I'm thinking, 'Man, I picked a hell of a
day to leave my bow at home.'"
Thor's booming laugh filled the air. "Ah,
Barton! Your tales of Midgardian mischiefs never fail to amuse!"
As the laughter subsided, Tony cleared his throat,
raising his glass. The room quieted, all eyes turning to him. For a moment, a
flicker of vulnerability crossed his face.
"No, seriously. It's good to have all of you
back. You've, uh... You've all been missed."
A chorus of "Salute!" rang out as glasses
clinked together. The team savoured the moment, this hard-won reconciliation after
so much strife.
As conversations resumed, Clint sidled up to
Natasha, nudging her with his elbow. "How about you, Widow? Care to say a
few words?"
Natasha rolled her eyes, a smirk playing at her lips
as she grabbed her drink. "Oh, no, no. I don't do the whole misty thing.
You know that."
"Come on," Clint pressed, grinning.
"Not even a little 'I actually really missed you guys' speech?"
"Nope," Nat replied, popping the 'p'.
"I'll leave the sappy stuff to Stark. He seems to have it covered."
From across the room, Tony called out, "I heard
that, Romanoff! And I resent the implication. I'm not sappy, I'm... emotionally
evolved."
As the night wore on, the team basked in each
other's company, relishing this moment of unity. Yet, even in the warmth of
their reunion, none could shake the feeling that this peace was fragile… a calm
before an unknown storm. They’d been doing this long enough; calm was fleeting.
The click of heels on the polished marble cut
through the chatter. Tony's assistant approached, her steps hesitant, a FedEx
box clutched in her hands.
"Mr. Stark," she started, her voice
apologetic. "I'm sorry to interrupt, but this just arrived. It's marked
urgent."
Tony's eyebrow quirked upwards, mild annoyance
crossing his features. He set down his drink with a dramatic sigh.
"Probably another one of those so-called 'urgent' PR things... Let's see
it."
The room quieted as Tony accepted the box, all eyes
drawn to this unexpected intrusion. He tore open the package and fished out a
simple, unassuming envelope. His name, "Tony", was the only
thing written on its surface.
"Well?" Steve prompted, his voice laced
with amusement. "What is it? Another humanitarian award?"
The team looked on, their faces still alight with joy
and excitement from the night's celebrations.
Tony's fingers worked to open the envelope, his
trademark smirk still in place. "Now, now, Rogers. Don't be jealous. I'm
sure they'll get around to recognising your boy scout ways, eventually."
The room fell into a tense silence as Tony scanned
the letter.
"You have us all on tenterhooks, Stark,"
Thor called from across the room.
Tony cleared his throat, frown deepening as his eyes
scanned the letter once more before reading aloud.
"Mr. Stark... Congratulations on getting the
band back together. With this note, you'll find a package. This package is...
extra special. Consider it an early K– Kers–Kersges… whatever that word
is… from our family to yours."
The team exchanged confused glances as Tony stumbled
over the unfamiliar word.
Natasha stepped forward, leaning over to read the
letter for herself. "Sounds Dutch… I’m pretty sure geschenk is
Dutch for gift.”
"Some gift," Clint muttered. "Anyone
else getting a bad feeling about this?"
Steve's posture shifted, the soldier in him
coming to the forefront. "Tony, is there anything else in the box? This
'package' they mentioned?"
Tony shook his head, still suspicious. "No,
just the envelope. But if there's another package out there..."
Bruce, who had been quiet until now, spoke up.
"The letter mentions 'our family to yours.' Any idea who 'our family'
might be?"
Tony raked his eyes over the team. "I've got
enemies, sure. But this feels… I don’t know. Personal?"
Rhodey stepped forward with a shake of his head.
"Hold on, let's not jump to conclusions here. This sounds exactly like
those bogus tips S.H.I.E.L.D.'s been getting ever since the team split
up."
The team turned their attention to Rhodey, confusion evident in their eyes.
"What do you mean, Rhodes?" Steve asked.
"Ever since the Avengers broke up, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s
been inundated with 'tips' and 'threats'. Most of them turning out to be
nothing but pranks and dead ends. Some people get their kicks out of riling up
Earth's Mightiest Heroes, I guess."
"So you think this is just another false
alarm?" Natasha questioned, her tone sceptical.
"I'm saying it's a possibility we shouldn't
ignore. The vague threat, the mysterious package, the dramatic timing… it all
fits the pattern. These pranksters love to use scare tactics, make us chase our
tails."
Tony nodded slowly, considering his friend's words.
"You might have a point there, Honeybear. But we can't afford to dismiss
it entirely, can we?"
"Of course not," Rhodey agreed. "We
should investigate, but maybe without going into full crisis mode just yet. No
need to let them think they've gotten to us if this is just another wild goose
chase."
The team seemed to relax slightly at this
perspective, the tension in the room noticeably easing.
"Indeed," Thor interjected, "we
should remain vigilant. Prank or true threat, it would be unwise to lower our
guard entirely."
Steve nodded in agreement. "Thor's right. We'll
treat this seriously, but let's not panic. Tony, maybe have FRIDAY do a scan of
the compound, just in case? And we should probably alert S.H.I.E.L.D., see if
this matches any of those false tips they've received."
"On it, Cap," Tony replied, some of his
usual swagger returning. "FRIDAY, you heard the man. Full scan of the
compound, and send a message to S.H.I.E.L.D. Let's see if we can't sort this
out without ruining our party completely."
As the team began to move, albeit without the
earlier urgency, Pepper squeezed Tony's arm reassuringly. "See? This is
why you need the team. You don't have to face every threat—real or imagined—alone
anymore."
Tony smiled, genuine warmth in his eyes as he gazed fondly
at their reassembled team. "Yeah, I guess you're right. Though if this
turns out to be real, I'm never letting Rhodey live it down."
After a few minutes, FRIDAY's voice broke the
anticipatory silence. "Boss, I've completed a full scan of the compound
and surrounding areas. There are no unscheduled deliveries or suspicious
packages detected. All clear."
A collective sigh of relief rippled through the
room. The tension that had coiled in their muscles began to unwind, replaced by
sheepish grins and chuckles.
"Well," Clint said, reaching for his
previously abandoned drink, "I guess some things never change. Even our
parties come with a side of adrenaline rush."
Natasha smirked, punching his arm lightly.
"Admit it, Barton. You'd be bored any other way."
Tony clapped his hands together. "Alright,
crisis averted. Let's get back to the real reason we're here. FRIDAY, cue the
music. And someone get Thor another drink before he starts swinging that hammer
around for entertainment!"
As conversations resumed and the music swelled, the
team gradually eased back into the celebratory mood. They remained vigilant, a
habit born from years of experience, but allowed themselves to relax and enjoy
each other's company.
Steve approached Tony, who was refilling his glass
at the bar. "You know, even if it was a false alarm, it was good to see
how quickly we all came together."
Tony nodded, his earlier vulnerability showing
through his usual bravado. "Yeah, well, that's what families do, right?
Even dysfunctional superhero families."
As the night wore on, laughter filled the compound
once again. The Avengers, Earth's Mightiest Heroes, were more than a team. They
were a family. And for now, at least, that family was whole again, celebrating
their reunion and the bonds that held them together through thick and thin.
Yet, as Tony's gaze drifted to the innocent-looking
envelope still sitting on the bar, a tiny seed of doubt remained. But for
tonight, he pushed those thoughts aside, choosing instead to savour this moment
of unity and joy.
After all, whatever challenges tomorrow might bring,
they would face them together.
